Basic Car Maintenance Checklist

Owning a car adds a great deal of convenience to your life. A breakdown due to poor maintenance, however, is terribly inconvenient. Keep your car running smoothly with regular vehicle maintenance.

Fluids

Check transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid and windshield wiper fluid on a monthly basis. Transmission fluid checks are done with a dipstick, but other fluid levels are simple visual checks. Low fluid levels could indicate problems for which you will need professional car repair Edmonds WA

Oil

Oil keeps your engine lubricated. You can get a professional oil change, but once you learn how to do it yourself, you may save a lot of money. Both the oil and the oil filter typically need to be changed every 3,000-5,000 miles, depending on the type of car you drive and your driving habits.

Tires

Your tires undergo regular wear and tear, but other factors such as temperature changes or rough roads can also affect them. Keep an eye on your tire’s tread by checking it monthly. You should also check the tire pressure frequently, especially after drastic weather changes.

Air Filter

The air filter traps dirt and other debris to keep it out of your engine. Check the filter every time you change the oil. You may not need to replace it every time, but expect to do so at least once or twice a year.

Lights

You probably notice right away if one of your headlights isn’t working. There are other lights on your car that you can’t see from the driver’s seat, though. Do a routine check of your taillights brake lights and turn signals to ensure that other drivers are getting the signals you intend to send.

Basic car maintenance may seem like a lot of work at first, but it pays off in the long run. A regular maintenance schedule keeps your car in good shape.
