3 Health Benefits of Red Wine

Many oenophiles enjoy a glass of wine with a meal. The wine flavors mingle well with many different foods, making the meal even more satisfying. Studies of those who consume red wine, in particular, have led to interesting observations about improved health through the drinking of red wine. At the same time, doctors traditionally advise light alcohol intake for the best health results due to serious side effects from overconsumption of alcohol and no alcohol for those with certain underlying medical conditions. However, ongoing research suggests that red wine, along with other types of alcohol, may provide three valuable health benefits.

  1. Increased HDL Levels

Moderate wine consumption, meaning one to two five-ounce glasses per day maximum depending on gender and age, may help to increase the high-density lipoprotein, called HDL cholesterol, that your body produces. This type of cholesterol helps to gather cholesterol and plays a part in sending it on its way out of the body, with the side effect of less likelihood of stroke or heart disease due to its actions.

  1. Reduced Artery Damage

Limited amounts of red wine may also benefit health by lessening damage to arteries. Low-density lipoproteins, or LDL cholesterol, can cause damage to arteries because it promotes the increase of inflammation and harmful plaque growth that can narrow the arteries. Because HDL cholesterol aids in reducing the amount of other kinds of cholesterol in the body, the understanding that red wine consumption can help raise HDL levels has the additional effect of reducing the harmful LDL cholesterol.

  1. Reduced Clot Formation

Studies indicate that red wine health benefits may include a decrease in blood clot formation. Blood clots can cause serious medical issues when they break free and then become wedged in areas not improved by their presence, like the lungs, for example. Substances that may help slow or impede the formation of blood clots can benefit overall health.

When taken in moderation, along with a healthy lifestyle that includes appropriate amounts of sleep, food and exercise, red wine may add to those elements that improve overall health.
