Most of you, WordPress users probably use Linux as hosting system for your WordPress engines. Because it is free to setup Linux with sql base and put there WordPress i think most ‘normal’ bloggers use this kind of configuration. It is not bad but in some life situations we need to go more Microsoft way.
There are plenty of situation where we need to setup WordPress on Windows platform. For my websites i use Debian VPS system but at ‘daily’ work we use Microsoft systems. So if i need WP for company use i need to configure Windows Server for it.
Microsoft release some GUI installer that make your (windows admin) life easier.
The Web Platform Installer Beta (Web PI) provides a single, free package for installing and configuring Microsoft’s entire Web Platform, including IIS7, Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition, SQL Server 2008 Express Edition and the .NET Framework. Using the Web Platform Installer’s simple user interface, you can select specific components or install the entire Microsoft Web Platform onto your computer.
One thing that i don’t like is short list of supported systems: Windows Vista RTM, Windows Vista SP1, Windows Server 2008 (no Windows 2003).
Now, in simple words installer come with: IIS7 (ASP.NET apps), SQL Express 2008, .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and Visual Web Developer 2008 Express SP1.
Remember that installer is still in Beta version, also you must know that it will reboot your OS while installing.
Personally i think Web Platform Installer can be useful even for me. Recently i’ve installed some Hyper-V server on Windows 2008 and now i can create there virtual machine and put Web Platform Installer to finished job for me. It will be fast and then i can test some software there: DotNetNuke, Drupal, Gallery, Graffiti CMS, osCommerce, phpBB and finally WordPress.
Hope this post will be helpful for someone even if you are open source fan. Maybe if i find some time today or tomorrow i try to create video tutorial showing how to install WordPress using Microsoft Web Platform Installer, like i wrote i got there some Hyper-V machine where i can test it.

for testing purpose I use IIS as my server but with windows 2.6 all permalink structure gone wrong and I’ve gone mad.
Later I’ve installed apache, MYSQL, PHP on my local machine and working on it. Feels I have more control over the machine now. Rather than running on LAMP or WAMP itz a good idea to set-up Apache
Sometimes in company there is a situation that you need to use Windows, company pay for it and now want to use it… or case similar to that.
I need to fix Hyper-V and then i will test this on Windows.
Very interesting.
Happy 2009.
