Good job on that, the best browser ever.

Conclusion

In the final words I must say Windows Vista will be great system.

In this time, you probably saw that i don’t have Aero. I have old Radeon 8500 (no DirectX 9 support) so i use standard Windows without 3D and other graphic tweaks.

This are not all the Vista gadgets, tweaks and new things. I just wanted to show you some of them. Not everybody can install Vista RC2.

Anyway i like new system, it will be great. One thing i don’t like is sound problem i got, no sound on my Sound Blaster card.

There are still some small bugs, and the bigger problem like not every program works with Vista for now.

Besides that, it is really a huge step forward for Microsoft and all computer users.

PS. But when i got my money i will buy Mac and OSX will be my primary system, still better that any other.

Still no antivirus? The free Avast works fine with RC1 so should work with RC2 I would guess.

Wondering if it’s any quicker than RC1, and if the memory utilization on certain apps has been corrected. Even with 2gb of ram on RC1, it was running at 50% because of the DWM & Searchindexer…

  5. 5 Peter (215 comments) Oct 10th, 2006 at 7:56 pm

Well, Craig, you could turn off some unneeded services, that really makes a difference memorywise.

  6. 6 Peter (215 comments) Oct 10th, 2006 at 9:13 pm

Craig it is hard for me to tell you this. For me it works very fast, one thing that you can turn off is sidebar.

RC2 is not a mile forward but i don’t see some bugs that was on RC1 version.

    You must try it

That’s not much of a review. You fail. Posting screenshots is not a review =)

Does RC2 act as an upgrade or does it wipe the drive clean? I have an old ATI All-In-Wonder 9000 128mb RAM just wondering if this should be changed? AGP8x If so what Video card would be a good change for the New Vista doing video Render and TV Viewing and ok acceptable graphics. I use Ulead Version 10 for my video render to DVD output and good stuff but the new OS should clean up any bifundancies (just a word) of organiziong the videos captured. Well Good screen shots and perhaps the next remake of the review will include examples of how it competes with OSX.

I agree with the anonymous post posted Oct.12th, your review was more like….an overview. More in-depth please.

  10. 10 Jay Osbourne (3 comments) Oct 13th, 2006 at 11:40 pm

Hey Thomas, I would recommend a NVidia 7800GS…it is the fastest out now for AGP and it should be quite acceptable for another 2-3 years. Peace.

  11. 11 D3k (1 comments) Oct 14th, 2006 at 5:24 pm

Is RC2 sable enough? would you recommend an install over my main system at this point? I’m using a geforce 6600 256mb agp and 512mb of main system memory.

  12. 12 Peter (215 comments) Oct 15th, 2006 at 4:55 pm

@D3k : Yee it is stable for me…. one big problem is that some programs didn’t work with it… also i don’t have sound so from tomorrow with new Caviar disk i am back to XP.

@Jay Osbourne : I got old Radeon 8500SE and it works with Vista but i don’t have Aero (need a DirectX 9 card) :(
Yee it is not a review but i just wanted to show you how it looks, for people that don’t want to install it yet !

Well, thanks for the screenshots and your thoughts anyways.

  14. 14 Linc (3 comments) Oct 17th, 2006 at 12:06 pm

Review or not, thanks anyways for letting us know and see how it works on your computer.

One thing that would be good to know is about what programs didn’t work with it; that makes a big difference for many people, who would like to try it, but are afraid to switch to Vista because they don’t know if the software they use for everyday’s work, will actually work.

And the one thing that’s really needed in this review, is some input about memory and resources… a few numbers; just something like, “I’ve got 2 Gb of RAM, and it takes up to 300 Mb without the unneeded services”, would be just perfect.

Those two points are easy to find out, would take just a few more lines of text, and would make it much more like an actual review.

But besides that, thank you very much for letting us know how it works. :-)

  15. 15 Peter (215 comments) Oct 17th, 2006 at 4:09 pm

    Thanks Linc
I am back on XP Pro now.

Programs, well Nero doesn’t work… i think you must search for more about this on google.

I use 1 Gb of RAM and it works very good for me.

Vista is pretty good but i don’t test it to well with all the programs i normall use so i can’t see the whole picture.

    Good luck with it :)

It’s working just fine for me.
I find it to be much less of a memory hog than the previous versions (eats up about 400 megs when idling, against around 500 from RC1).
Though, I’m getting really tired of the UAC. I hate to have to comply any time I open the dev. manager (quite often in my case) or the inability to have a list of programs that shouldn’t be asked for through the UAC.
Worked for me as an upgrade over RC1, but it didn’t went smooth at all: it did overwrite my previous settings _and_ all of the drivers which I had installed in RC1 were replaced by microsoft ones (those that hadn’t any built in driver from MS, simply flew away) so that I had to reinstall each and every driver.

I think I might reinstall it from scratch… Or maybe I get just too tired and get rid of it.
Feels a bit faster than XP on regular stuff but gaming with an ATI card is no walk in the park (blame ATI for that, no opengl support on vista at all as of yet) and some utilities won’t feel to be running optimally (multimedia ones like BS player, video format converters, and things like that)

I don’t like the idea that the windows explorer always shows the “favorite places”, I just want the bare list of drives and folders to have all the space available.
Aero isn’t that big of a deal, the cool-task switcher is something I almost never use (even though it is as simple to stroke [win key] tab as alt tab).

In a nutshell, feels good for me, but not quite there yet. More driver support is needed… And as shamely as it may sound, I’m using an MS ergo 4000 keyboard and can’t install the intellitype software to get all of its features working as in XP.

@DeepBlue : Thanks for this comment. It will help many people that search for “user” info about Vista.

  18. 18 Linc (3 comments) Oct 21st, 2006 at 6:05 am

@DeepBlue: keep in mind that this is still an RC/beta version. A lot of things still don’t work. And as they plan to release the final version sometime next year, I guess some things will be fixed and/or updated. Once the final release is out, we’ll see how it actually works.

@Peter: thanks for your reply. Just that single number is an important technical data. I can imagine that Vista will take up more resources than XP, but at the same time it is supposed to work faster.

I guess we will have to wait for the fulll official release to get the idea of what will work and what won’t work.

I installed Vista RC2 the other day, everything seemed fine and vista itself seemed very stable and very fast, the layout of vista i thought was superb but would still take abit of getting used to.

I done a clean install and wiped my hard drive, i needed to my hard drive was full of junk anyway. At the moment i have no sound which is annoying, my soundcard broke last week so i have ordered a XFI Extreme sound card and hopefully that should sort the sound problems out. when playing games (Counterstrike) there is sound and also when i do a speaker test through my onboard Audio console my speakers work perfectly however i cannot listen to music or watch films with sound.

hopefully the next installment of vista will have sorted this problem out

I know I can get vista RC2 via “torrent” but I don’t have a broadband connection.

If any one of you guys can burn the “iso” image into a DVD and mail to me that would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks in advance
